viewers here in the united states and around the world. we're watching some potentially significant developments in washington. yesterday we learned that a suspicious envelope did reach the office of a united states senator, senator wicker of mississippi. an envelope that was tested not once, not twice but three times and so far proven to be positive for ricin. but authorities say they need more testing. they're sending that letter to maryland where the u.s. government does these kinds of tests for suspicious letters. a lot of nerves frayed as a result of this letter. and now a second letter they have stopped. a suspicious letter similar to the letter sent to senator roger wicker of mississippi addressed to the president of the united states. that letter is now being investigated as well. at the same time we've heard of these evacuations and the freezes, if you will, from various senate office buildings. all of this happening in the aftermath of the boston marathon bombings. so nerves are frayed right now. everyone is on edge as the president of the united states gets ready to come to boston tomorrow to participate in an interfaith memorial service. let's go to the white house, brianna keilar is standing by. bria

and others have introduced bills in the united states senate to address precisely the questions that you are asking, governor, and we have supported them and we continue to look forward -- as a prosecutor i always want more tools. you know, i see a problem out there and i want to have the tools to fix it. we passed a hate crimes law in 2009 that enables us to work with local law enforcement in much more effective ways to combat hate crimes including but not limited to lgbt motivated violence. so we'd love to have more tools. but, you know, with the tools that we currently have, we're doing as much as we can and i think ruslyn's point about the uptick in the number of complaints we're both receiving, i'm not sure that necessarily reflects, as ruslyn correctly pointed out, that there's an uptick in violence. the doctrine of futility often resulted in less complaints being seen. i think there's a commitment in the federal level to doing our level best on these issues. >> tom, you talk about tools. ruslyn, what kind of tools, part of this is raising awareness, looking at best practices,

to the background checks for gun sales vote. right now, a clear majority of the united states senate supports the toomey amendment. 62 senators on record for it. 40 on record against it. that should be great news for people who want background checks, right? after newtown, it's got clear majority support to expand background checks. except the republicans are filibustering it so majority won't matter. the 40 senators who are voting no are not committed to voting against the background check. they are voting against there allowing to be a vote on the background check on the amendment. they are voting to filibuster. a majority is voting in favor, so they are going to try to block the up or down vote. jeff flake waited until the coverage of the bombings last night to announce, quietly, silently, in fact, on his facebook page that he will vote against background checks. eight in ten of his constituents in arizona support background checks. he said last night or rather wrote to facebook last night that he's going to vote no. he's voting to filibuster, quietly. that was last night around 9:00 p.m.
